Oscar Pistorius Trial – Could it have been prevented?
The trial of Oscar Pistorius is under way and one cannot help but wonder if it all could have been prevented.
According to court documents, Pistorius stated that he had heard a noise from the bathroom adjacent to his bedroom on the second floor of his luxury house in a security estate in Pretoria. He heard the noise in the early morning hours and allegedly felt vulnerable. He was not wearing his prosthetic legs at that time. Pistorius wrote in his original affidavit that he had been burglarized before and that he suspected that an intruder was in the bathroom.
Oscar Pistorius further stated the following: “There are no burglar bars across the bathroom window and I knew that contractors who worked at my house had left the ladders outside.”
“It filled me with horror and fear of an intruder or intruders being inside the toilet. I thought he or they must have entered through the unprotected window.”
Why did he not have burglar bars on the windows?
Oscar Pistorius fear of South African crime
The website of Silverwoods Country Estate advertises the security of the estate as follows: “The estate is enclosed with a solid, electrified security wall with strict access control utilizing the latest security measures throughout the estate. Regarding security as a high priority, the services of a specialist security consultant have been used to ensure the use of the latest technology.”
Although Oscar Pistorius says that he is anxious about South African crime, he still resided in a safer environment than the majority of his countrymen.
Why did he not have burglar bars on the windows if he felt unsafe? His home is part of a security estate, a safe environment. But, still … if he felt unsafe, he could have added security measures a long time ago, couldn’t he?

Could this entire tragedy have been averted if he had fitted burglar bars on the windows? Would he not have felt safer? Would he possibly have been less prone to having an alleged gun fetish?
